Just Say No To Plastic!

I'm trying to reduce my plastic even more this year. I already don't use plastic water bottles, plastic wrap, grocery bags, soda bottles, and things like that but I do still use a few plastic sandwich baggies a year (yes a year, I only use them when I forget to have a container ready for my husband's lunch), and to much plastic waste from food.

Beth from Fake Plastic Fish is always "helping" me find more ways to reduce my plastic. Like this year we went to using Seventh Generation TP and we had been buying it in store until Beth told me that she gets hers on Amazon.com and they come wrapped in paper not plastic. It's also much cheaper!

This video she made this year is sure to help inspire you as well.

One way I have reduced my use of plastic already this year is I got a set of Pyrex storage containers on sale a few days ago. They do have plastic lids but they are made in the US (a big deal for me) and are BPA free. Plus the lid won't touch the food and it's much less plastic and Pyrex is a very good brand and they should last for a very long time.

I also order another LunchBot's container in hopes it will help me not need those few plastic sandwich baggies.

So how are you reducing plastic this year?

I have a bunch of those Pyrex containers.....I have been collecting them for about ten years. I have a wide variety of sizes. They work great! I use them in the freezer/fridge/oven and have had no trouble with them even the ones that I have had ten years are still going strong!

Great video! Do you think Beth would mind if I put it on my blog?

One of my goals for this year is to limit my trash to one kitchen bag per week (and I bought biodegradable bags). I've been successful with this the past two weeks, and in fact, I'm already past a week's worth in the current bag.

One thing I'm trying to figure out is how to pack leftovers that need to be microwaved for David and Chris. I have divided plastic dishes with lids that I currently use but I'm not crazy about heating food in plastic. On the other hand, I'm not so sure that sending glass is a great idea, either. Suggestions?

Oh, and do you know where Beth gets those small liners for her compost container? I actually have a small, lidded container that I could use for that purpose if I had liners.

I pink puffy heart my Pyrex. Beth is SUCH an inspiration--eating food from scratch is the biggest way to reduce our plastic use, and I use our own canvas bags for shopping and buy milk in glass jugs. Unfortunately SO much is packaged in plastic and there are no options for some products we use. But we are getting MUCH better at this house.

FLCATXOK: I'm sure I will have to buy some more Pyrex very soon. I'm hoping to kind of see what sizes I need more of and then get some from Amazon, they have really good prices.

Mom(Deanna): I hope Beth doesn't mind because I have seen it on a half dozen blogs hehe. I'm sure she would love to see it out there more.

I need to put our trash in a different bag for a week to see how much we make, I'm sure it's not to much. (I HOPE!)

For Chris and Dad, could they store a few real dishes out there to microwave food on and then just rinse them and bring them home every few days? Or they make carrying cases for glass containers so they won't break. If you want I can try and find where I saw those.

For the compost liner I'm not sure where she gets hers but I'm going to be posting a video on how to make your own compost liner and links to buying them later this week.

Green Girl: Me too! My milk is still in plastic but it's local milk so it's a pro-con kind of thing. We only use around half gallon a week so it's not to bad. I try to buy recyclable plastic if I do buy plastic and for the most part I do a pretty good job.

I've been using glass jars, glass food storage contains, and wax paper bags for a couple of years, but its still easy to forget NOT to use plastic. My goal is to not use the plastic produce bags at the store, I'm going to make my own produce bags.

Carla: Sounds like a wonderful goal!

My main vice has always been drinking from plastic water bottles, and it has only been since the start of this year that I have stopped completely, and now I just drink tap water. :)

I think the carrying cases for glass containers would be our best bet. If they get out of the habit of bringing stuff home every day I'm afraid they'll end up with a whole bunch of dirty dishes at work!
